Altered Book ~

Learn how to take a book and create a new story or journal. Over the course of four classes we will transform a book into your own story or a journal to chronicle your daily life or perhaps a vacation or special event. To create this book we will use paper (some vintage), notes, envelopes, ink, and stamps to cover the old story and tell a new one. Bring your own book or I have many to choose from. Dictionaries are my favorite to create with. This would make a lovely present. A materials fee of $15 is payable to the instructor the first night of class.
Nov 7 - 28th2016Mondays for 4 weeks from 1:00 - 4:00 pm

Art Journaling ~

Learn how to express yourself through art and the written word. Keeping a journal of our days and thoughts on paper is a forgotten art. We will assemble a small journal and create different forms of collage, mixed media backgrounds and use favorite quotes to inspire journaling. Documenting your life for yourself and future generations is worth your time and effort. Making it fun makes all the difference! Class is suitable for young adults 16 and up. This is a great project for a mom and child or grandmother & grandchild to do together. A materials fee of $15 is payable to the instructor the first night of class.

More Styles and Techniques

This class can be taken without taking my first art journaling class. There are so many techniques and styles of art journaling. We will dive into making journals from recycled materials. We will also look at different painting techniques, such as gel printing and using stencils. I love mixed media and all its layers. Come learn how to add texture and depth to your pages. A materials fee of $15 is payable to the instructor the first day of class.

OPEN ART STUDIO EVENTS ~ 5 Wednesdays in all

Go to my Facebook  (click here) page to sign up by clicking on Going OR email me which date(s) you would like to reserve.
I have just created 5 Open Art Studio events. The first date of Apr. 27th has only 1 opening and the 2nd date, of May 4th is filled. The remaining 3 dates are completely open. For those of you that have attended my classes please invite a friend to come with you to these events and share this on your personal Facebook page.
I will have a waiting list for each event as needed for any last minute cancellations.
Please be considerate of my time and if you sign up for an event make sure you can come. I understand illness and life events happen. I want to keep cost as low as possible for these events.I have limited each one to just 4 participants so we have plenty of space to create and I can give you some one on one time during the 3 hours of workshop time.
If you have anything special you would like to learn during Open Studio events please let me know by way of comment, email or PM (private message). I will try my best to fit it into a mini workshop during our tome together. You can join an event by clicking on Going or letting me know personally. Please do not hesitate to ask questions.
I have loved my classes this winter and spring and look forward to continuing our art journeys together. New students are most welcome!!
DATES: April 27th (two openings), May 4th (filled, waiting list), May 11th, May 18th & May 25th TIME: 1pm to 4pm

Pink Flower Collages

I have been having fun with collage and layers of stamping.
Using old book pages, pattern tissue papers, scrapbook papers and music sheets is so much fun.
I used gesso to mute some of the colors and blend the edges.
Then I used my fingers to paint a flowers and added beads to create a large flower image.
I added a fun sentiment with stamps and called them done.

New painting technique and Give Away!

I recently purchased a new book called Painted Blossoms by Carrie Schmitt.
The book has lots of mixed media techniques for creating expressive flower art.

Book Cover

So this week I got back into my studio and followed a lesson. It was nice to try something new.
I decided to paint over a couple canvases that were not going in a direction I was happy with. I love that you don't have to stay the course when something isn't going the way you want.
Winter Garden 16
This is a 12x12 canvas that I had added a piece of scrapbook paper to the background and did the peeled paint technique on it. You can see it a little in the background. Then I added lots of blues and greens to the background with my fingers. Let that dry overnight.
Then I added the flowers with colors I don't really use that often. I used a little dabber to add some of the circles. Used bubble wrap to add some texture to background. Then I added the stems with a thin paint brush. Using blue to give it a winter feeling.

This next one is an 8x10 I had used some playing cards on and stamped some images. I didn't like it at all. It was in a pile of start over some day things.

This one I took yellows, pinks and oranges and created a background heavy with texture. Allowed to dry over night and then added flowers with my fingers, dabber and a stencil. I added sections of background color after doing flowers which is very different from anything I have created before.
I mixed the lime green with a light blue for some of it. As you can see not much of the original background made it to the finished piece. Something I want to work on. But again I was going for a winter look. I used a white chalk pen to added details to the stems and flowers in both pieces.

As I write this I am feeling a give away is in order. I don't know about you but Feb is my hard month. The winter blues can get a hold of me pretty easy.
So to brighten 2 people's day I am giving away at the end of the week both paintings in a random drawing from those who comment here and on my facebook page. And if you comment and share from both places you will be entered for each.
Thanks for taking an interest in my art!
Have a great mid winter week!!
Winners will be announced Sunday 2/14.

Preparing for New Classes

I love the variety of classes I am able to offer through
our county's adult education program.

We traveled for about 2 weeks at the very beginning of the new year, I was able to visit with family and friends. Our oldest son and daughter in law gave us a very cool Christmas present ... we are going to be grandparents at the end of August this year!! It was fun to see them and be able to talk about all these new feelings for our families.

Now that we are back home and a fresh 5" of snow to make everything look new and sparkling, I plan on spending the day in my studio working on a few projects. I have started trading art again. I have signed up for 2 ATC (artist trading card) swaps. And I am doing a partnership journal with a new online friend in FL. We will trade homemade journals back and forth for the year and use spiritual words
as our themes.

I also will be developing my class timelines. I like to organize what will be covered during each class in an orderly manner.
Makes for a smooth creative progress.

Here is a look at my recently completed 2016 daily journal. I made it from a college textbook. The cover has not been altered yet.
Thank you for stopping in for look. Look forward to meeting you at one of my upcoming classes!
